Day 1: Making up for lost driving

I've been struggling with a cold to end all colds. It started after my mom and I returned from a restful spa weekend. I woke up the next morning relaxed and glowing from my facial but could not swallow or talk. This continued on and my yearn to attend our friends New Years Eve party set me back another set of days as well as forcing us to postpone our road trip.

I woke up this morning and was finally able to breathe through my nose! The time had come to pack up and leave our small Ohio town.

I packed my goods.

And Peter packed his.

Said good bye to our chilly yard.

Loaded up the car and headed south.

Our first leg was uneventful. We made sandwiches and leftovers at at pit stop, snacked on the bags of Christmas chocolate (score), and  made it through a good chunk of Game of Thrones without getting too confused over who was who and what exactly might be happening at any given time. Still, a very entertaining book!

Due to the "sick days" taken out of the trip we are plugging ahead to make up for lost time. We bypassed Nashville, which is only 5 hours from our home anyway, and will make it another adventure for another time. We clocked in a little over 10 hours of driving today, settling in Montgomery, Alabama for the night.

We did get a taste of the local dining, taking a page from Jane and Michael Stern by stopping at Martin's Restaurant for dinner.
As you can tell from the picture the place looks almost closed. It was in the back of a shopping complex was was the typical place we would have bypassed for a Denny's or the like. To our surprise Martin's was open and to our joy it was filled with lots of local families and elderly couples. A very friendly and delicious first Road Food experience.

We went all out. I started with some sweet tea and chowed down on their homemade cornbread and biscuits that they brought to the table; honey bear available to slather on either.

This wasn't necessarily the kind of place to whip out an old and noisy camera to take a picture of your food, but I am guessing that most of the places we go to will be like that, so I sucked it up, embarrassed Peter pink, and took a sneak shot of my fried chicken.

I ordered the fried chicken dinner (recommended by the Sterns) with mashed potatoes, butter peas, and collard greens. Peter got fried catfish still  in the shape of the fish with tail and bones included under the batter. His sides were mashed potatoes, okra in tomato sauce, and coleslaw.

At the moment Peter is refusing to give this place a rating until we try the next joint on our list. He will say that it was better than the tuna sandwich he had for lunch this afternoon. I would give it a 7 out of 10. I like friend chicken and this had a lot of meat to it, but if it were not recommended I probably would have tried something else. Sides were excellent and I LOVED the sweet tea. The pies are also known at Martin's but with a belly full of fried chicken, three sides, and two cups of sweet tea, I had to tap out.

It may only be 9pm our time but I am exhausted and still in the state of constant motion even though I am sitting in one place.

Our plan for tomorrow is to head to New Orleans for lunch and to keep on keeping on.

To New Orleans and beyond!
Lexi
